Watercolour portrait finished

When to stop painting? I realised the paint on the portrait was a bit thin this morning, but this was after thinking that I could be a bit more subtle with the tones. In this instance I changed my mind and decided to deepen the tones, especially the darker areas. Also, I have treated the skin more realistically, adding texture and mottled appearance.

Growing Up

Painted an oil version of Blue Mask for a demo in the HAC for the Wednesday and Thursday classes.

We tried a paintalong on the thursday which surprisingly went well. (I imagined chaos).

Good fun and pretty intense at the same time.

Interesting to see the two paintings of K at different ages. Four and fourteen.

Archie’s No.20

This cheerful and colourful painting is by Archie Carswell.

I love this. It makes me smile every time I see it.

I painted Archie’s portrait after his show at the HAC as I liked the idea of his own painting as a backdrop to the figure. So we have made a swap and this now hangs in the hall and M + K  have a smaller version in their rooms.

Kate as Michael Stipe

This is a study of Kate in her choreography class make up. A quick work up to see if the image works as a painting. It is very theatrical but subtle enough to show character, I think. Reminds me of Vermeer’s ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’. I think I’ll try and work towards a finished version of this.

The format is 8″ square. This is for the Hansel charity exhibition in Prestwick which is an annual event and all paintings are this size. Handing in day has passed but maybe I could slip this one in early next week. Fingers crossed.
