Pastel demo

Demonstration in pastel this morning for friday group. I was intending to show a heavy, thickly applied pastel but it turned out to be an exercise in random direction cross hatching. It’s difficult to force something that is unpracticed. I was looking at a pastel book and admired the way Ken Paine painted with his sticks. Sculptural and with a spontaneity that appears effortless. My marks were on the delicate side for “impasto” pastels.
I am happy with the drawing and surprised myself with how direct and fast a pastel drawing comes together.

  1. Beautiful.

  2. Love it, the cross hatching and layering of colour really adds to the texture and emphasises the long and possibly hard life of the subject.

  3. Didn’t realise that pastel could be this expressive David. Thanks for posting.

  4. great to watch it all come together David 🙂

  5. The delicacy of the strokes is striking–it creates a terrific inner connectivity in the image, almost as though it’s stitched, embroidered. Lovely.
