Demo – charcoal portrait

A demonstration portrait in charcoal. This one was being filmed for the local authority for a school project. I’ll post the video when it comes back to me. Meanwhile, this is the finished drawing. An exercise in tone and also at the start the paper is coated in charcoal dust and rubbed in lightly. This gives a midtone immediately and takes away the fear of drawing on white pristine paper. Lots of putty rubber use in this to bring up highlights.

  1. Beautiful technique.. I love the unfinished look of his collar. Great work!
